The Runner's Edge

a runner's performance potential

Most runners know that at least 50 percent of running is mental—but few recognize how understanding the psychology of running can help them. My goal is to change that.

As a leading expert in the psychology of running, I empower runners to accomplish their goals by sharing unique mental strategies that can help transform their running and their lives.

I do this in one-on-one sessions that can be take place in person, on the phone or via Skype. I also speak at marathons and other races and present at workshops to help others reach their full potential. My columns and articles can be seen in The Free Press and active.com, and I am working on syndicating my column to help runners throughout the world. I have also served as an expert on the psychology of running for magazines such as Runner's World, Shape Magazine and Women's Running Magazine

My quest is to make real-world mental strategies more available to runners at all levels. The mental toughness skills that I teach can help all runners, whether they are running their first 5K, training to qualify for the Boston Marathon, competing in a triathlon, or working towards the Olympic Trails.

The mental toughness skills I focus on will allow you to:

  • Develop your mental toughness so you remain confident and focused in training and during the race.
  • Overcome pain and adversity during your training and the race through the use of positive thinking techniques and attention strategies that work.
  • Boost your motivation to help you accomplish your running goals and dreams.
  • Be more mindful when you run so you can enjoy the experience to the fullest.
  • Increase your confidence through understanding yourself, your strengths, and your ability to build on those strengths.
  • Be more dedicated to running so you can be the best you can be.
  • Find your optimal level of energy and arousal for you to perform to your potential.
  • Set running goals that are perfect for you, challenging but realistic.
  • Deal with an athletic injury in a way that will be productive and allow you to return as quickly as possible.
  • Remain focused on thoughts that help you run your best.
